Q4 Clue 803 | Low literacy
The Week of Reading and Writing has started, and Low Literacy is at the root of it. How does this have implications based on the DISC Styles?
D-style
Challenges. Like dealing with a computer or smartphone. Finding a job. Understanding bills. Even standing up for yourself is difficult. Nearly 100,000 people live in poverty in the Netherlands alone due to low literacy.
I-style
Participating in society. It’s not literacy, but as an adult, you struggle with reading, writing, and/or arithmetic. Consequently, you are not good enough to participate. There are about 2.5 million people in the Netherlands.
S-style
Family and health. Children of low-literate parents often also have a language deficiency, so there will be a next generation as well. The health situation is also less good. Just read the medicine labels and leaflets…
C-style
Recognise. Signals like ‘Forgot my glasses’ or ‘sore hand’. Having no email address, not using full stops or commas. Difficulty with mobile banking, etc. Discuss it and know there is much help available.
