Q4 Clue 809 | How do the styles say no?
Every style naturally has a way of saying ‘no’. There is no right or wrong, but it is good to know this, recognise it and be able to adapt when a different style of no is more desirable. How do the different styles say no?
D-style
Direct, even if it means ‘conflict’. If something is no, then it is a no. What the other thinks or feels about that doesn’t matter. Rational and accepts the consequences.
I-style
For this style, it does matter how the no ‘could be received’. Doesn’t want to be seen as an unkind person or a bogeyman. Seeks ways to sugarcoat or soften it and/or brings it lighthearted.
S-style
Maintaining the good ambience takes precedence (at least for a long time). Also above a no if it could affect the mood negatively. Eventually, it will come, but only at the proverbial straw.
C-style
Indirect and also based on rationality. The indirectness comes from first wanting to think about it carefully and to line up the facts and arguments. But then can also easily give a ‘hard no’.
